FS1 (Foundation Stage 1) / Preschool – Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

We provide a carefully balanced approach that combines teacher-guided learning with child-initiated exploration, enabling children to grow in confidence, independence, and curiosity.

1. Communication & Language

  • Focus: Listening, understanding, speaking

  • Skills include:

    • Listening to stories, rhymes, instructions

    • Understanding simple questions

    • Building vocabulary through play

    • Speaking in sentences (simple conversations)

    • Asking and answering questions

  • Activities:

    • Story time

    • Puppets & Role play conversations

    • Singing songs

2. Literacy (Early Reading & Writing)

  • Focus: Pre-reading and pre-writing skills

  • Skills include:

    • Enjoying books and stories

    • Recognising print in the environment

    • Mark making (lines, shapes, scribbles)

    • Developing phonological awareness (rhymes, sounds)

    • Handling books correctly

  • Activities:

    • Story baskets

    • Tracing & Drawing

3. Numeracy

  • Focus: Early number and shape understanding

  • Skills include:

    • Counting objects ($1$–$10$ and beyond)
