Year 1 / Kindergarten 2 – Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

We provide a carefully balanced approach that combines teacher-guided learning with child-initiated exploration, establishing foundational proficiency in literacy, numeracy, and scientific curiosity while developing fundamental physical and creative skills.

Detailed Curriculum

1. English

  • Focus: Early reading fluency, systematic phonics, and basic sentence construction.
  • Skills include:
    • Developing decoding skills for unfamiliar words
    • Reading common exception words
    • Sequencing ideas logically to write sentences
    • Using capital letters, full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks
    • Using simple conjunctions (and, but, because)
  • Activities:
    • Listening to and discussing stories, poems, and non-fiction
    • Retelling familiar stories and sequencing events
    • Making basic inferences and predictions from texts
    • Writing for different purposes: stories, lists, captions, simple information texts

2. Mathematics

  • Focus: Number sense, basic operations, spatial awareness, and foundational measurement.
  • Skills include:
    • Counting to and across 100, forwards and backwards
    • Reading and writing numbers to 100
    • Using place value within 20 and 50
    • Learning number bonds to 10 and 20
    • Recognising, finding, and naming 1/2 and 1/4
  • Activities:
    • Solving addition/subtraction problems using objects and number facts within 20
    • Solving simple multiplication/division problems using grouping and sharing
    • Measuring length, mass, and capacity; telling time to the hour and half past
    • Recognising and naming common 2D and 3D shapes

3. Science

  • Focus: Observation, simple testing, and exploring the natural world.
  • Skills include:
    • Identifying body parts, senses, and basic needs of humans and animals
    • Understanding plant growth, structure, and seasonal changes
    • Recognising the properties and uses of everyday materials
  • Activities:
    • Working scientifically through hands-on observation
    • Tracking and simple testing of weather patterns across the year

4. Art and Design

  • Focus: Creative expression and learning fundamental artistic techniques.
  • Skills include:
    • Using drawing, painting, and sculpture to develop ideas
    • Learning basic colour mixing and techniques
  • Activities:
    • Studying the work of artists and describing differences and similarities
    • Using a range of materials creatively

5. Physical Education

  • Focus: Fundamental movement, coordination, and teamwork.
  • Skills include:
    • Developing fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, throwing, catching)
    • Developing balance, agility, and coordination
  • Activities:
    • Participating in team games
    • Performing simple dances
