Curriculum Intent

As the culmination of primary learning, we consolidate prior knowledge while extending pupils’ engagement with abstract concepts, analytical reasoning, and sophisticated communication, fully preparing them for the academic demands of secondary education.

Detailed Curriculum

1. English

  • Focus: Advanced comprehension, highly structured compositions, and articulate public speaking.
  • Skills include:
    • Refining advanced comprehension: inference, deduction, prediction, and critical evaluation
    • Mastering complex sentence structures, varying register (formal/informal), and precise vocabulary
    • Exploring passive/active voice, subjunctive forms, and cohesive devices
    • Justifying opinions with evidence and evaluating competing ideas
  • Activities:
    • Engaging with classic literature, sophisticated fiction, and plays
    • Drafting persuasive essays, reports, formal letters, speeches, and narratives
    • Participating actively in drama, debates, and formal presentations

2. Science

    • Recognising fractions, decimals, and percentages as representations of proportion
    • Introducing formal concepts of ratio, proportion, and algebra
  • Activities:
    • Solving complex, multi-step problems requiring justification and estimation
    • Generalising patterns, representing unknowns symbolically, and solving equations
    • Engaging with area/volume calculations, and shape transformations in coordinate systems
    • Constructing pie charts/line graphs and calculating measures such as the mean

4. Social Studies

  • Focus: Making meaningful connections between the past, present, and future through history, geography, PSHCE, and global citizenship.
  • Skills include:
    • Developing chronological understanding, cause and consequence, and continuity
    • Interpreting historical sources and evaluating evidence
    • Building advanced skills in mapping, spatial awareness, and environmental analysis
  • Activities:
    • Examining significant periods of British and world history
    • Investigating sustainability, climate change, resource use, and global challenges
    • Exploring PSHCE concepts: mental wellbeing, financial awareness, and human rights

5. French

  • Focus: Consolidating linguistic competence, increasing accuracy in grammar, and developing deep cultural insight.
  • Skills include:
    • Increasing accuracy in sentence construction and early verb conjugation
    • Describing, explaining, and expressing opinions with growing independence
    • Maintaining accurate pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension

    • Studying weather, seasons, and comparing climates in different regions
    • Exploring the geography of French-speaking countries and their physical features
    • Analysing, reading, and performing French poetry and literature
